Character Background: Marian Hawke is the eldest child of Malcolm Hawke and Leandra Amell, an apostate mage of unknown origin and a noblewoman from Kirkwall respectively. Her father died before the Blight struck, so when she had to flee her home of Lothering with her mother and younger twin siblings, she was essentially the family's head. She lost her brother Carver in the escape, but with the assistance of a soldier named Aveline, she managed to flee to Kirkwall with her mother and sister.

After a year of living in the slums with her uncle and working for a smuggling ring to pay off the debt of having her family permitted into the city, Hawke had already made a name for herself. Still, with a city full of Templars looking for apostate mages, such as her sister Bethany, and with her uncle still demanding that they support themselves, Hawke needed a significant windfall to ensure their family could live comfortably, and that her mother could recover their former nobility. Through her efforts to achieve that boon, she met the dwarf rogue, Varric, master storyteller and wry wit to match her own, and the two became fast friends. Through Varric, Hawke was given the opportunity to join a dwarven expedition into the darkspawn-infested Deep Roads to search for treasure.

Needless to say, the expedition didn't turn out exactly as planned. They were betrayed and left behind by Varric's brother after uncovering an eery idol filled with evil kinds of magic (unbeknownst to them at the time), which was stolen by Bartrand (the brother). Despite this setback, they escaped, and more importantly, found even more treasure. Enough that years passed and Hawke became a well-known name, even in the upper circles. Unfortunately, while Hawke had been away, Bethany had been taken by the Templars to be sequestered with the other mages in the Circle of Magi, but she made a point of writing back to tell Hawke not to worry about her. Left with only her mother and her dog to care for (as well as a couple of dwarves named Bohdan and Sandal she helped back at the expedition, now living with her as manservants, sort of), Hawke's adventures took her all around for a while, eventually leading to dealings with the Qunari, a religious sect of large horned men who had been stranded in Kirkwall's dock area for some time, much to the discomfort of the natives. Meanwhile, her mother's newfound romantic interest proved disastrous, leading to her death at the hands of a mad blood mage attempting to recreate his former lover using pieces of other women. The usually sarcastic and lighthearted Hawke was rendered understandably stricken by this fate.

This event was part of the catalyst, one small spark before the fire started. Relations with the Qunari and the Kirkwall government degraded quickly, and despite Hawke's attempts at impartial diplomacy (via smartass commentary; she is not a born diplomat), it eventually led to war. Forced into action, Hawke was pushed to fight the Qunari, and eventually defeated their leader in single combat. This earned her the title "Champion of Kirkwall", invitations to stuffy dinner parties, and a shiny medal, as well as a statue at the docks.

A few more adventures (read: DLC quests) later, and mage/templar relations in the city had begun to deteriorate as well. As Hawke herself puts it, her title becomes increasingly equivilant to "only person in Kirkwall who ISN'T insane", as the head of the Templars and the First Enchanter (head of the Circle of Magi) begin going at each other's throats. Forced to take a side, but trying her damnedest to stay out of the middle of it, Hawke tends toward the mage's side, due to her sister's situation. But the breaking point is coming, and her mage renegade friend Anders, moron he is, has set in motion a plan that will ruin everything for everyone, and make her an unknowing accessory to it. But that happens later.
Abilities/Special Powers: As a rogue, Hawke's specialty is stealth and using daggers. She's a talented thief, assassin, and infiltrator. A regular fantasy James Bond, complete with catastrophic plan deteriorations and political trainwrecks.

Third-Person Sample: She woke up to Bodahn hesitantly tapping on her shoulder. The images from her dream faded quickly, and she struggled to remember what it was about. But there was nothing, and Bodahns voice informed her that a man in templar armor had left a message for her to read at her earliest convenience, but that it was also urgent. She grumbled something about the contradiction, but nodded and waved Bodahn off with a half-hearted statement of gratitude. When he was gone, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes and stared at the fireplace in front of her. The templars were still willing to ask for her help, even after all the work she'd done to help mages of the city either return to the Circle or escape it entirely? They were either very trusting or very stubborn. And they weren't the types to trust easily. Well, if it kept them from coming down on her head, she'd see what they wanted from her. Maker forbid she had to actually take a side, though. She looked down at her hands as she contemplated that possibility. If it came right down to it, she would choose the side of the mages, she felt certain of that. That much she owed to Bethany. For leaving her on that expedition, for failing to protect their mother...

That dream. Thoughts of her mother brought on that hazy feeling of deja vu, and she closed her eyes to try and follow that feeling. Her mother's face, smiling back at her. Why would she be smiling? Was it just a memory? Maker, her smile was always so sincere. Not like Marian's own smile, so often painted with sarcasm or smugness, a jester's mask to convince people she had confidence in her actions. It wasn't always fake, of course. She had fun. She enjoyed her capers. She just didn't like where many of them led. In the face of logical fallacy and ridiculousness, the temptation to throw it right back often seemed the best solution. Expose the flaws of the argument with sarcasm, expect the other party to understand your intent and see how ridiculous they're being. Not a plan that pans out very often with Qunari, mind you. Her mother liked her jokes. She was the scoundral of the family, but she made up for it by being charming. That winning smile got her out of a lot of trouble, almost as often as she got into it. The rest of the trouble was settled very neatly by her blades.

Both of those methods were working less and less lately. People with grave problems won't trust a person who smiles too much, and killing people was becoming more and more often the result of a plan gone awry, rather than the original intent. It must have been affecting her behavior, though. Even her friends had noted she'd changed. How could she not change? It wasn't by choice if she had. Had she gone from little miss "not my problem" to "miss goody-two-shoes"? She'd never done much more to help feed the poor and clothe the hungry than was served with an interesting adventure out in the free marches or a fight with a criminal syndicate, but she was never callous, just... whimsical. And now she was supposed to be a hero? For killing a bunch of Qunari? How does someone even process that? What would her mother have thought of all this? Her daughter, the Champion of Kirkwall, supposed intermediary between the Templars and the Circle. Some people had even dropped hints about her becoming the next viscount, which she had decided quite firmly to ignore. That sort of responsibilty gets you beheaded, if the former viscount was any indication.

She was roused from her thoughts by her mabari licking at her hand. "What? What's with that look? No, there's nothing wrong with me." It tilted its head back at her. "I know, why don't we go find some monsters for you to chew on?" It gave her a happy bark, and she stood back up, that confident look back on her face. And, at least for the time being, it was real.

Video
[The video opens to a horizontal profile of a woman staring at the ceiling, her crystal blue eyes focused intently upward. After a moment, she grunts, and sits up, brushing short black hair back from her face. The red mark across her face is more evident when she looks in the direction of the camera, staring at the wall behind it.]

... Okay. Can't say I'm familiar with this style of interior decorating. Orlesian, probably.

[The video times out as she rummages around the room, picking up and pocketing anything that looks valuable enough. Only fair since most of her stored equipment seems absent save for what she had on her. When it starts back up again, it looks like the device is being held in her hands as she monkeys around with it.]

-ome sort of artifact or something? Probably not worth much, either way...

[She taps at the camera inquisitively; someone will need a crash course in electronics before the day is through.]

Text
Rather presumptuous name, "Wonderland", isn't it? It may very well be wonderful, of course, but given the drawbacks I'd say it falls short of the title. "Interestingland", maybe. "Kidnapping-memory-stealing-land", perhaps? Has a catchy ring to it, don't you think?
